Baker scores a win in first gov debate

Boston Herald - Round 1 goes to Charlie Baker in the first televised debate of the governor’s race.
The Republican nominee smartly linked independent Tim Cahill (a Democrat deserter) to Gov. Deval Patrick, almost endlessly mentioning both in the same breath even as Baker-and-Patrick exchanges virtually obliterated Cahill’s air time.

Fact checking candidates’ claims in WBZ debate

WBZ - Did Charlie Baker receive state aid to help turn around Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare?
During Tuesday night’s gubernatorial debate on WBZ-TV, Charlie Baker adamantly claims he did not.
What’s the truth?
We asked former Attorney General Tom Reilly, who oversaw Harvard Pilgrim’s restructuring for the state.
Reilly says, “There was no bailout.  There was no state bailout…. Charlie Baker never asked for money, and he never received any state money.  He asked for time.  He had a plan to turn around Harvard Pilgrim.  We had a number of options at the time, and in the end we trusted him to do the job, and he got it done.”

GOP’s Baker outlines cost-cutting agenda for Mass.

Boston Herald – Republican Charles Baker tried today to seize momentum from the first debate to introduce him to the bulk of Massachusetts voters, outlining the steps he would take immediately if elected governor and rebutting one of the central themes enunciated a night earlier by the incumbent, Democrat Deval Patrick.

Baker: Inefficiency, taxes hurting Mass.

Worcester Telegram – An inefficient and spendthrift state government stands in the way of a successful and prosperous Massachusetts, Republican gubernatorial candidate Charles Baker said yesterday morning at the Republican Labor Day breakfast at the Elks Lodge.
